An explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut has left thousands wounded and at least 100 people killed. We have launched a new Emergency Appeal in response to dire shortages in hospitals – your support is urgently needed today.
A massive explosion at Karantina sea port on Tuesday 4th August has sent shock waves across Lebanon’s capital of Beirut. It is said to be the worst explosion Beirut has experienced – generating seismic waves so powerful it was reported to be equivalent to a magnitude 3.3 earthquake and was felt as far as Cyprus.
At least 100 people are reported dead, with 4,000 wounded, and it is expected that the toll will rise further as many are still missing and possibly trapped under rubble. MAP trustee, Ghassan Abu Sittah, a Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon who has been treating the injured, says that hospitals have already run out of sutures and disposables.
Hospitals have been flooded with casualties and search and rescue efforts are still ongoing. MAP is responding by getting urgent medical supplies into the hands of doctors treating the injured at Palestinian Red Crescent Hospitals.
