A message from MAP Trustees to supporters

A number of supporters have reached out to seek clarity about the organisation’s leadership and operations during the present period, after it was announced that CEO Melanie Ward was standing as a candidate in the UK General Election. We wish to thank them for letting us know their concerns, which we take very seriously.

After it was confirmed that the CEO would be standing as a candidate in the UK General Election, the board have moved quickly to safeguard MAP’s strict adherence to political impartiality and to ensure that the organisation has the necessary leadership, and ensure the continuation of its vital work upholding the rights to health and dignity of the Palestinian people. We have also taken independent advice to ensure MAP’s compliance with all relevant guidance and regulatory requirements from the Charity Commission, the Electoral Commission, and employment law. MAP does not support any political party.

Accordingly, the CEO agreed to take an immediate leave of absence from the charity, and since then has had no involvement in operational decision-making at the charity. This is aligned with the action taken by other charities that are in a similar situation during the election. We also recognise that if Melanie is elected as a member of Parliament, it will not be possible for her to continue as MAP's CEO.

The Board has since appointed two highly experienced members of the senior management team as interim Co-CEOs who, along with the wider Senior Management Team, and MAP’s teams across the occupied Palestinian territory and Lebanon, continue to work exceptionally hard in their mission to uphold the rights to health and dignity of the Palestinian people.

Through them, MAP is continuing to deliver in the largest, life-saving humanitarian relief operation in the organisation’s 40-year history in Gaza, while also ensuring the communities we serve in the West Bank and Lebanon can access the services and quality healthcare that is their right. You can read more about that work and its impact here.

We wish to reassure you of our support for the organisation’s position as a vocal defender of Palestinians’ rights through MAP’s advocacy and campaigns. MAP has called for a ceasefire since the beginning of Israel’s attacks on Gaza, and is currently campaigning for an end to UK arms transfers to Israel, to prevent their use in further atrocities, and will continue to do so until these demands are met.

We also wish to recognise the heartfelt dedication of our supporters to the cause that MAP serves: upholding the rights to health, dignity and justice for all Palestinian people. We share that commitment, and are grateful for the solidarity and support you have shown to MAP and its staff at this most difficult time. Thank you, as ever, for your support.
