Health Under Occupation: Ensuring accountability for attacks on healthcare and achieving the right to health for Palestinians in the oPt

Tuesday 21 March 2017, 15.00-16.30

Room  XXVII, Palais des Nations, Geneva

What will be discussed?

The side event will discuss how 50 years of occupation of Palestinian territory and 10 years of blockade and closure of Gaza have detrimentally impacted the right to health of Palestinians.

Our panel will explore how restrictions on freedom of movement affect the physical accessibility of healthcare, including lifesaving treatment, for patients in Gaza and the West Bank. The panel will also discuss healthcare barriers facing Palestinians in East Jerusalem.

In addition, panellists will discuss how impunity for attacks against medical personnel and facilities not only threatens the sustainability of the Palestinian health sector, but also the international norms which guarantee the protection of civilian infrastructure and humanitarian personnel in times of conflict worldwide.

The panel will explore action the international community should take to ensure accountability for attacks on healthcare and protect the right to health for Palestinians.
