A big Thank You to the Medical Students of the University of East Anglia. Read about their incredible fundraising achievements in support of MAP below.
In October 2016 UEA Medsoc chose MAP as their charity for the year. The charity was selected by a vote from a selection of charities. It is always important to Medsoc to support a charity that is medically or health related and so MAP really stood out to us. Furthermore, the work you do for Palestinians was really inspiring and we really wanted to support this.
The fun started in December at our Christmas ball where we made the most of Christmas generosity with a raffle. Although some people were unhappy with the results as many prizes were won by members of the committee! We managed to raise just over £160 making it a successful first attempt in our fundraising mission.
Our next fundraiser came in the shape of jailbreak. This event saw 8 teams of intrepid explorers take on the challenge of getting as far away from UEA as possible in 24 hours without spending any money. The winning pair managed to travel 624 miles and get to Toulouse. All the teams that took part were sponsored and we managed to raise £4,400 which greatly surpassed our target.
April saw many medics take on a challenge many others viewed as near impossible - the Norwich half marathon. The team was really successful with one of our runners being the second female to cross the line. In total, we raised £1500.
Our last event of the year came in medics raising and giving week. The final and most intense push for fundraising. Three events in three days is not easy! The first event came was a charity netball game which generated a wide variety of themed costumes and a general realisation that there are lot more rules to netball than people remembered. The next day we held a ‘Give What You Can’ cake sale in the student union in an attempt to target people’s revision cravings. Finally came ‘Medics’ got talent’ which saw a display of talents including mars bar eating. This week raised £530.
In total, with a few extra bits thrown in, our fundraising reached £6595.01. It’s been so much fun and a real privilege to raise money for MAP this year and we wish you all the best for the future.
