The entire team at Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) are immensely sad to learn of the death of Jeremy Hardy last week. Jeremy was a long-time friend of MAP, and vocal supporter of our mission to help ensure the rights to health and dignity of Palestinians.
In 2017 Jeremy travelled to the West Bank, accompanied by fellow comic Imran Yusuf, to visit MAP’s projects and partners, including our mobile clinic supporting Bedouin Palestinians in the Jordan Valley. The documentary they produced, ‘Health Under Occupation’, highlights the damaging effects of perpetual military occupation on the wellbeing of Palestinians.
He also attended and performed at MAP’s events, including the 2017 ‘Give It Up for Palestine’ comedy night which helped raise vital funds for MAP’s protects across Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian territory.
“Jeremy made jokes about his height,” said Aimee Shalan, MAP’s Chief Executive, “but as one of our trustees declared when they heard the news, he was a moral giant.”
“Always ready to challenge injustice with a perfect combination of mischievous wit, his support for the rights of Palestinians was unflagging. He revelled in the implausible extent of Palestinian hospitality and managed to speak about the daily grind of the occupation without belittling the immense impact of its routine indignities. We’ve lost a wonderful friend.”
We are forever grateful for all the energy and time Jeremy lent to MAP, and his lifelong dedication to challenging injustice will continue to inspire us in our work. His wit and warmth will be missed by us all.
