Edinburgh Dook fundraiser for MAP

On New Year's Day in Edinburgh, a group of 10 swimmers and two paddlers, cheered on by a big crowd, braved the icy cold waters of the dook, all to raise vital funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). Our Community Fundraiser spoke to some of the participants of this incredible fundraising event to find out more.

Sandra, who has taken part in the Edinburgh Dook for MAP for many years said:

"The day of the dook did not bode well. However, by email, our ace organiser Sylvia assured me the sun would come out – and it did. So, tucking ourselves away at an obscure part of the beach at Portobello, dookers and supporters assembled at 1pm.

“The Palestinian flag was raised, and off we went. 13 degrees on the beach – how nice. The water however was ice. I am sure it was warmer last year.”

This year the Edinburgh Dook for MAP were also joined by new faces, including sisters Ellen and Rosie who said this was their first dooking experience:

“We have heard about the annual fundraising Loony Dook for years and we finally had the chance to join in and it was great fun! I think it was a wonderful way to start the new year; surrounded by people who wanted to do something good and help others, especially after the last two years we have had in lockdown.

“It was lovely to be part of such a good group raising money for such an important cause.”

MAP would like to thank all of the amazing participants who took part and the supporters who came along to cheer them on. We would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Edinburgh dookers' Just Giving page. With your incredible generosity, they managed to raise over £4,200 for our medical projects in Palestine and Lebanon.

Thank you dookers! See you next year.
