MAP Gaza team and emergency medical teams win Third Sector Awards

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is delighted to have been honoured with two prestigious Third Sector Awards for our work in Gaza: Frontline Team of the Year and Volunteer Team of the Year. These awards are a testament to the commitment, steadfastness, and courage of our Palestinian colleagues who have been working under unimaginable conditions in Gaza for almost a year, and the tireless dedication of our emergency medical teams who have supported them amid Israel’s ongoing military offensive.

The Frontline Team of the Year award honours the work of MAP’s team in Gaza, who have faced constant challenges as they continue to deliver lifesaving aid to their communities. Despite Gaza being the most dangerous place in the world to be an aid or healthcare worker, they have provided more than $9 million USD worth of aid to Palestinians including essential drugs and disposables, hygiene kits, food packages and shelter supplies. They have established medical points across Gaza, supported the rehabilitation of hospitals damaged by Israel’s military attacks, and launched a nutrition programme which aims to screen more than 41,000 people for malnutrition over the next six months.

The Volunteer Team of the Year award recognises the vital work of MAP’s nine emergency medical teams (EMTs), comprised of international medical experts, who have been entering Gaza with MAP since December 2023 to treat injuries and infections among Palestinians, and support exhausted and overwhelmed local hospital teams. Over the past 10 months, our 42 EMT volunteers have conducted 3,676 consultations and 661 surgeries on civilians.

Steve Cutts, MAP’s Interim CEO, said: “These awards highlight the extraordinary efforts of our teams, both in Gaza and internationally. Our volunteers and local staff have shown remarkable steadfastness and compassion under unimaginable conditions. MAP remains committed to providing the support they need, and we are deeply honoured that our work has been recognised in this way.”

Fikr Shalltoot, MAP’s Gaza Director, said: “This recognition is not just for MAP, but for the incredible Palestinian doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers who have been working day and night, even under the threat of bombardment, to treat the injured and care for their communities. Their unbreakable spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity inspire us all.”

The awards come as MAP’s locally-led team in Gaza continues to deliver the organisation’s largest humanitarian response in its 40-year history. The recognition from the Third Sector Awards underscores the vital work our teams are doing, and their unwavering commitment to supporting the rights to health and dignity of Palestinians.

We are immensely grateful to all who have supported MAP’s emergency response this year, and continue to enable our Gaza team, emergency medical volunteers and teams in Lebanon and the West Bank to save lives and uphold the health and dignity of the Palestinian people.

With your donations, we can continue supporting Palestinians across the occupied Palestinian territory and Lebanon.
