MAP runner: Tom Gibson

Tom Gibson, from Galashiels is taking on not one but two running events to raise money for MAP on his JustGiving page. Read below to find out why he decided to support MAP and how you can get involved too.

'I became aware of the situation for many Palestinians following the bombing of Gaza in 2014 and seeing pictures of the destruction of lives, homes and schools. I was astonished at the restrictions on and poor standards of healthcare for Palestinians living under occupation. However, the work of MAP, providing medical care to Palestinians since 1984 gave me hope that charities such as MAP can improve the lives of Palestinians with medical care and support.

'I decided to run for MAP because of the great work they do on a daily basis to ensure that Palestinians can have access to medical care.I was also impressed by their campaign to highlight Breast Cancer in Gaza.'

'Only 2 out of 5 of Breast Cancer patients in Gaza survive for 5 years after being diagnosed, compared to 4 out of 5 in the UK. I found this figure shocking and wanted to raise money to help MAP support these women.'

'I decided to run the Mens 10K in Edinburgh, running passed the scenic capital of Scotland, sounded a nice way to raise money. The weather was surprisingly dry but chilly and I finished the race in 48 minutes 49 seconds in Murrayfield Stadium. I would recommend anyone to take on a challenge and raise money for MAP. The great work they continue to do was definitely worth the sore legs I had the next day.'

Not only has Tom taken on the Mens 10K in Edinburgh but he will take part in Spartan Race, an obstacle in Edinburgh in July 2017 to raise money for MAP.

'Raising the money for MAP and knowing the money will help provide care to those who need it most is one of the proudest things I have done. I can safely say I have now got the bug to continue my fundraising for MAP. '
