Israeli military kills pregnant woman and child in attack on MAP partner organisation in Gaza City

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is horrified by Israeli military attacks on two of its partner organisations in Gaza City over the weekend, which killed one of their employees, a pregnant woman and a child, and left others injured.

These attacks come as the Israeli military pushes forward with its intensified assault and invasion of Gaza City, driving thousands from their homes and exacerbating a human-made famine that is devastating the city’s population.

On Sunday 7 September, the headquarters of the Association for Women and Child Protection (AISHA) was struck by an Israeli military attack, killing one of its employees, as well as a pregnant woman seeking support from the organisation, and a child. Many others were injured in the attack. MAP works with AISHA on providing mental health for Palestinians in Gaza.

Fikr Shalltoot, MAP’s Gaza Director, said: “We are devastated to learn once again that our colleagues in Gaza have been killed. What we are seeing in Gaza City is not collateral damage; it is the predictable and preventable result of deliberate Israeli policies and actions that harm civilians and healthcare in violation of international humanitarian law. The UK and other governments must not continue to stand by while civilians are bombed, starved, and systematically denied lifesaving aid.”

On Saturday 6 September, a medical point run by Ard El Insan (AEI), was forced out of service after being damaged by an attack on a nearby school. AEI, which partners with MAP on critical nutrition projects, has been providing lifesaving services as Israel’s blockade of food and aid has resulted in a man-made famine being declared in Gaza City.

Israel’s genocide in Gaza has seen the indiscriminate targeting of civilian areas, including homes, schools, hospitals and displacement shelters. More than 64,000 Palestinians have now been killed in Gaza since October 2023, the majority of them women, children and the elderly.

Israel’s forced displacement orders in Gaza City have pushed tens of thousands of people into overcrowded, unsafe and inhumane conditions. The intensified offensive in Gaza City is accelerating Israel’s genocide and Gaza’s descent into famine, disease, mass forced displacement and the annihilation of healthcare services.

We urgently call on world leaders, including those in the UK, to act to enforce an immediate and permanent ceasefire, and pressure Israel to lift its total blockade of Gaza. We demand that the UK and other states uphold their legal duty to prevent and stop genocide, including by suspending arms transfers to Israel and supporting international accountability.
