MAP and UNRWA partner to support healthcare for Palestine refugees in Lebanon
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) have signed an amended MOU to improve and support Palestine Refugees in Lebanon affected by critical health conditions.
Under this agreement, MAP is contributing US$ 1 million to the UNRWA-administered Medical Hardship Fund (MHF).
The MHF, established in 2016, aims to ensure better access to treatment for poor and vulnerable patients with severe and chronic health conditions by providing financial support for hospitalization and other essential medical interventions.
UNRWA and MAP agreed to work together to further enhance access to essential hospital care and treatment, with a focus on Palestine Refugees requiring inpatient hospital care, medical interventions, and provision of medication for chronic diseases.
An MOU was signed during a meeting attended by MAP Chief Executive Officer Stephen Cutts, Director of Programmes Sameer Sah, and Lebanon Director Wafa Dakwar. UNRWA was represented by the Deputy Director of UNRWA Affairs (Programmes), Oliver Bridge.
This contribution comes at a time when many Palestine Refugees in Lebanon continue to face severe socio-economic hardship, limiting their ability to afford the high cost of hospitalization and specialised treatment.
“This new contribution will help UNRWA continue providing support to Palestine Refugees in accessing life-saving health services, amid growing challenges in maintaining essential services, including health care, for Palestine Refugees,” said Mr. Bridge.
“For more than 40 years, MAP has been increasing access to healthcare for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. At a time when they are suffering chronic and worsening medical conditions, MAP is pleased to contribute to the MHF to help ensure that Palestinian refugees receive the life-saving treatment they need”, said Mr. Cutts.
The project will be implemented immediately upon signing and will run for a period of one year.
