NEWS QUOTE: "The killing never stops" - MAP calls for accountability after deadliest Israeli military attack on Gaza in weeks

At least six people were killed and 14 others wounded in an Israeli military strike on a group of Palestinians at a cafe in Gaza City yesterday, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. A child was also reportedly killed in the attack.

The bombing is the deadliest attack on Palestinians in Gaza since Israeli military airstrikes resumed on 12 August, after more than a week’s pause. Despite the reduction in airstrikes following international diplomatic talks, Israeli forces continued to carry out ground-level shelling, shootings and drone attacks across Gaza. At least 1,273 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military attacks in Gaza since the so-called "ceasefire" began in October 2025. Another 4,223 have been injured and many thousands more continue to lack access to critical medical care.

Mai Elawawda, MAP's Communications Officer in Gaza, said: "It has been more than 300 days since the so-called "ceasefire", yet Palestinians in Gaza continue to be killed almost every day – the killing never stops.

"I keep thinking about the people who were at the sea yesterday. For many Palestinians, the sea is one of the very few places they can go to try to escape the heat, take a moment away from the conditions they are living in, or simply feel some sense of normality. And yet, there is the continued fear of Israeli military attacks happening anywhere in Gaza, at any moment.

"I can’t help but think of my own family, and of myself, and what it means to know that you could be among those killed simply while trying to get away for a few hours, sit by the sea, or take a breath.

"Alongside this, people are still living through forced displacement, the extreme summer heat, unbearable conditions in tents, lack of water, and the constant struggle of getting through the most basic parts of daily life."

This cannot continue. Palestinians must be protected. The daily killing and suffering must end. And most importantly, a ceasefire must be an actual ceasefire.

MAP Communications Officer in Gaza, Mai Elawawda

Neveen, an administrator with MAP in Gaza City, who lives near the location of yesterday’s attack, said: "The continued targeting of civilians is terrifying and it's something any of us could face at any moment. We have become afraid to move around or even go out for a walk, in case there is another Israeli military attack."

MAP calls on the UK government to:

  • Ensure the ceasefire is upheld, becomes permanent and ends Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
  • Ensure accountability for all violations of international law and signal clear support for international accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court.
  • Suspend all arms sales to Israel, including parts for F-35 fighter jets, and end all military cooperation with Israel until violations end.
  • Allow full humanitarian access in order to restore Gaza’s health system.
