MAP-supported side events at the UN Human Rights Council (Tuesday 19 March)

Ending impunity: The case for the right to health in Gaza

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) is supporting two side events at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday 19 March. If you are attending the Council session, please come and join these two panel discussions on the right to health in the context of the 'Great March of Return' protests.

Part 1

Time: 10:00 - 11:00

Room: XXIV, Palais des Nations

This first panel will discuss the context of the ‘Great March of Return’ protests in Gaza – prolonged occupation, 12 years of illegal closure, and the de-development of the health system. The nature and scale of the healthcare emergency caused by Israel’s use force in the context of the protests will be examined, as well as the restrictions Israel places on the movement of patients and their access to care. How these practices and their disastrous effects on the right to health of Gaza’s population can be reversed will be discussed.

Speakers:

  • Moderator: Neil Sammonds, Director of Advocacy and Campaigns, Medical Aid for Palestinians
  • Prof Michael Lynk: UNSR human rights in the oPt, (TBC)
  • Dr Mahmoud Matar: Consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in Gaza
  • Mahmoud AbuRahma: Communications and International Relations Coordinator, Al Mezan
  • Soheir Assad: Advocacy Coordinator, Adalah

Part 2

Time: 12:00 - 13:00

Room: XXIII, Palais des Nations

The second panel will discuss the findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry (CoI) investigation into violations and abuses of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the context of the protests in Gaza. This investigation will be placed in the context of previous UN investigatory mechanisms on Gaza, and Israel’s failure to adequately investigate and prosecute those responsible for serious violations of international law. Recommendations for action that Member States must urgently take to end the cycle of impunity will be discussed.

Speakers:

  • Moderator: Issam Younis, Director General, Al Mezan
  • Representative of the Commission of Inquiry (TBC)
  • Raji Sourani: Director, Palestinian Centre for Human Rights
  • Dr Tarek Loubani: emergency medic, shot and injured in May
  • Rania Muhareb: Legal Researcher, Al Haq
